How to Test a 12 Volt Electric Solenoid

When a solenoid no longer functions, the starter will not get any power to engage the flywheel and start the engine. In most cases there will be a clicking noise coming from inside of the solenoid as the magnetic switch attempts to close and complete the circuit. However, a drained battery or faulty wiring will also cause the same symptoms. Checking the voltage at the solenoid is a sure way to troubleshoot the problem.
Set your voltmeter to read 12 volts DC. Attach the negative voltmeter probe to a negative ground wire on either the car or the negative post on the battery. Attach the positive probe to the wire that connects the solenoid with the starter. Activate the solenoid--in most cases, this means turning the ignition on. If you do not read 12 volts, the solenoid is bad and needs to be replaced.Things You'll Need:
