How to Test a 12 Volt Electric Solenoid

May 10, 2010 | tags Volt Electric Solenoid   | views

When a solenoid no longer functions, the starter will not get any power to engage the flywheel and start the engine. In most cases there will be a clicking noise coming from inside of the solenoid as the magnetic switch attempts to close and complete the circuit. However, a drained battery or faulty wiring will also cause the same symptoms. Checking the voltage at the solenoid is a sure way to troubleshoot the problem.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Voltmeter
  1. Step 1

Set your voltmeter to read 12 volts DC.

  2. Step 2

Attach the negative voltmeter probe to a negative ground wire on either the car or the negative post on the battery.

  3. Step 3

Attach the positive probe to the wire that connects the solenoid with the starter.

  4. Step 4

Activate the solenoid--in most cases, this means turning the ignition on. If you do not read 12 volts, the solenoid is bad and needs to be replaced.
